Remote and International Students
It's much easier to collaborate if you're in the Portland Metro area, but we've worked with some success with remote students. Just show up on the Zoom meetings, and we can chat about how you might get involved. For the obvious reasons, software development is our most successful remote collaboration project.
We do work with international students. We're bad at other languages (sorry) so good English is a must, but that's about it in terms of requirements. That said, there are two important issues to know about:
Being many time zones away from our local Pacific timezone (UTC-7) makes it difficult to communicate. That said, we mostly use Slack to communicate, so instant messages do work.
Finally, there are some countries we have to shy away from because international politics. We're sorry about this, and think it's stupid that students can't work together because of politics, but we're constrained by local and national regulations. Luckily, nothing that we work on so far falls under any really strict regulatory compliance (like ITAR).Â
